Five * visit on a clear day.

We drove our rental car up here from Porec, parking at the top where the shuttle bus unloads and near the parking ticket machine. The upper level entry road has plenty of space during the off season, especially in the morning. I bought a 1 hour ticket with my card for 10 kn and we walked 350 m up the cobblestone lane passing gift and truffle shops to the Town Gate. Then 60 m more passing restaurant diners enter the Town Wall Gate which empties into the main square with a perfect view of the 17th C St. Stephen. It was closed so we walked along the northern wall for its excellent viewpoints to vineyards, farm fields and forests. Our favorite view was from the Porec road 3 km south called “View Motovun” on Google maps and next to a roadway cafe. Nice visit on a clear day.

On arrival by car, you have few options - leave a car on few parking lots in the bottom of the hill, or try to park on the road uphill or in middle of the hill, if you lucky. Bottom parking was full already by lunch time. There is a small bus, delivering uphill, you can buy either one way or two-way ticket. Runs every 1/2 hour. We took bus to top only, and walk down ( ca 10 minutes ). As never been in such cities before, got really immpresed. How many picturesques moments on every street, nice views from top. Wall perimeter itself is accessable with tickets only. A lot of small local specialitie shops and many restaurants. It's all about truffles here. Really worth to visit. Accesing from Pazin side, there are 2 stops giving panoramic view of whole city.

    A Hidden Gen
We visited this wonderful fortified mountain top town on a marvelous sunny spring day. Traveling through vineyards, forests and farm lands, our mood only got better at we traveled up the side of the mountain to a parking area. At that point, a shuttle bus takes visitors almost to the city gates. The rest of the approach is a brisk uphill two block hike on cobblestones. You can break up the trek by visiting the wonderful shops that sell art, truffles, and silk scarves. Once inside the city, there are other shops and pubs that invite a visitor to rest and enjoy the atmosphere. For a small fee, travelers can walk the city walls (in about 15 minutes) and view the newer parts of the area in the valley. Public buildings might not be open but one can use the restroom in the hotel if needed. This was part of the Venetian empire so watch for the 13 winged lions on various walls and gates.
