Just one of Many Underneath the Modern City
There is an assumption that the modern city of Pula was built over the ancient Roman city formerly known as Pietas Julia; who knows what lies underneath the modern town. This mosaic that lies about six to eight feet down is all that remains of a Roman room from about two thousand years ago. The state of preservation is excellent. The mosaic depicts a geometric grid containing a series of rosettes and a single pictorial reserve featuring the Punishment of Dirce. The mosaic is sort of difficult to find. You follow Sergievaca Street from the Arch of the Sergii about half way down to the Temple of Augustus. On the left side of the street is a long and narrow women's clothing shop. You enter and pass through to the back where you will find a small terrace overlooking the mosaic. The mosaic is covered with a roof to protect it from the elements. Enjoy.

Hidden gem
Followed the signs but still had to look for it! If you follow the sign which takes you into a car park, turn left and you’ll see a tiny handwritten sign. The mosaic is tucked away at the back of the car park by the entrance to a dentists! Below ground level and protected by a grill, you look down on it. It’s in remarkable condition and worth persevering to find to admire such a well preserved piece of history.

Amazing Mosaic/Sad Display
Mosaic floor was in very good shape...amazing. Colors were faded, but stones intact. Signage was terrible for locating site and Pula should be ashamed for allowing such a wonderful piece of history to be contained in such a rundown “shed”. Covered, with concrete blocks surrounding it with wire above. Weeds and trash with a little sign regarding it’s place in history. Sad to see such a treasure so sadly preserved.
