Ancient Paintings on the Stones

The petroglyphs museum is located not far from Cholpon-Ata town, the heart of the recreational life at the Issyk-Kul. It reflects very ancient part of the history on the region and located in very close proximity. If you like very ancient artifacts - you must go there. the place is very well known by local taxi drivers. In summertime you can always find a local guide, who will tell you about the paintings and other sacred stuff located at the museum under the open sky.

    Worth visiting
This is an open air museum featuring petroglyphs. They called it "Stone Garden". The area is huge. Instead of just checking out ones near the main gate, and leave in 15-30 minutes, I suggest that you stay longer and walk further down to the deeper end of the museum to check out more petroglyphs. The carving is interesting and precious. Quite fascinating. There is only one mobile toilet (Asian style with a hole on the ground).

    Cholpon Ata actually
Nearing the end of our drive around the ‘stans last summer we were headed to Cholpon Ata and stopped in at the Saimaluu Tash Reserve Museum. It is incorrectly labelled as being in Karakol and even the name is not the same as it is in real life but we found it anyway thanks to the skill and knowledge of our man Timur (also asking people for directions helps when the internet and websites fail). It is full of ancient petroglyphs on rocks, someones ancient doodles but is very interesting to see them and know that they have stood the test of time
