Unique Experience

Everything about this park and the visitor center at this end of the island is a unique experience. The trails are filled with lush plant and animal life...you never know what is waiting for you around any bend. The quiet lapping of lake water against the rocky shoreline or the trickling of slow flowing creeks combining with the many bird songs to form a musical backdrop on any hike. The different aromas put out by various plants at different times of year. Maybe most unique is the general feeling of being cut off from the rest of the world. I loved my time on Isle Royale, and I particularly enjoy this end of the island because it is the "wild side" of the island. The staff at the Windigo Visitor Center could not be more helpful and eager to make your visit the best it can be. Make sure you stop in to get suggestions from the rangers.

Review of Windigo Camper Cabins, adjacent to Visitor's Center
These two one room cabins are a great way to do your introduction to the park. Run by the same company as the Rock Harbor Lodge, these 2 cabins are in Windigo. They are uphill from the boat landing, so be prepared to climb! These adorable cabins have lights and electricity, two bunk beds in 'separate' rooms, and a fold out futon that can sleep two. The privy is a few yards away, as is the potable water source. They have a great deck with two comfortable deck chairs, and it's close to the store and the start of all of the Windigo trails. The cabins come with a propane grill, and the store sells ice, so you can bring perishables in a cooler if you like. We used backpacking meals and fresh fruits and veggies, but loved the ability to have a lovely place to put our feet up at the end of a long hike. It was also great to have good shelter from the rain that came down while we were there! If you love camping, but love the idea of a comfy bed at the end of the day, this is a great option!

Good visitor center with outstanding rangers
With no ferries running, we opted for a day trip by seaplane to get to Isle Royale. After a 45 minute flight we landed in the harbor by Windigo and taxied to the seaplane dock. We were met by a ranger who first took all of the multi-day hikers/campers for an orientation. We took a hike around the campground area and were surprised that many of the sites had their own cabin. We returned to the visitor center and the ranger spent one-on-one time with us discussing animal sightings, trail options and things to do. Before leaving the VC we bought a couple of trinkets and checked out the exhibits at the visitor center, which were surprisingly good. We expected a little shack, but this is nice, large VC with a balcony that's good for a rest break. We took a hike to an overlook and got lucky to see two bull moose, up close and personal! When you hike up a ridge and pop above the trees, the views are terrific. Upon returning, we had another good chat with a different ranger about recent sightings and experiences with wolves and moose. All in all, we had a terrific visit that was truly enhanced by the rangers; bless them for their work..
