Overall, this is a challenging, beautiful and quiet hike along the length of the island. I really enjoyed the north half of the hike, from Rock Harbor down to about Hatchet Lake, as you get up on the spine of the island and enjoy some really fantastic views across the island in all directions. Even in 'crowded' months like July and August, you can hike for hours without seeing anyone else on the trail. I didn't enjoy the south half of the trail as much, from Hatchet Lake down to Windigo, as the trail was decent but there wasn't much in the way of views because you're in dense forest. Plan this hike well and be prepared to make it an enjoyable experience.

the greenstone trail, as one can see from the map, goes right across the middle of this isle. it was a nice hike through some thick birch tree patches and than highs along the ridge able to see lake superior to the south. we enjoyed stops at hatchet lake for a night and then chickenbone with a trek around the lake. final stop was at three mile before ending at rock harbor the following day. unfortunately with the longest continuous predator-prey research project in the world, we did not see any wolves or moose. the good thing was even with a full boat from grand portage, we seen a minimal (3-6) amount of people along the trails. bugs were bad, but the DEET did it's job in prevention.
