Giant turtles, black sand, ancient art and giant turtles!

This easily accessible beach lies between the towns of Pahala and Naalehu, and is a popular detour when visiting the Volcanoes National Park. It draws both locals and travelers to its shores for its gorgeous black sand—a result of underwater volcanic activity—and for those hoping to catch a glimpse of the elusive and endangered hawksbill and green sea turtles. If you're lucky, you might spot these creatures resting on the warm, black sand. Hawaiian monk seals sometimes make a rare appearance, too. Tours of the Big Island often include a stop at this black sand beach, along with Akaka and Rainbow Falls. – Tripadvisor

One of many Black Sand Beaches...
We came here really for the turtles I guess as passing through and I noticed one... of course people were too close as usual... but what I didn't realize is that this is actually a normal beach where there are life guards and people actually come to swim/sunbath etc. - I expected a middle of nowhere wild beach because of the turtles.. I guess I was wrong! TIP: there are some souvenirs stops here as well - I purchased a tiki here, they are of course highly prices because of the location, $60 USD, but this was the only place I have come across in 3 weeks between 4 major islands that had nice tikis that had also HAWAII carved/engraved on them!

    Turtles!!
We stopped at this beach on our way to Volcano. The waves were a little rough for us but we have been told that when it's calm the snorkeling is fantastic. I was amazed at the turtles that were just lounging on the beach. They were magnificent. I was happy to see that all the people were respectful of the space that they needed. There are facilities-toilets and showers. I would definitely recommend stopping here.
