    Changing Weather
This is a wonderful scenic route that will occupy about 4 hours of your time. If it’s raining, keep on driving, chances are it will change as you drop in altitude towards the ocean. Plenty of scenic pullouts and hikes to satisfy everyone. Despite continuous light rain, we still managed to hike to the petroglyphs and the sea arch. Plenty of other worthwhile quick pullovers for photo opportunities. And lots of native Nene’s along the road!

    Well Worth the Drive
Although the road’s name suggests that you’re going to see something that resembles a moonscape, many of the volcanic craters are so ancient that plentiful vegetation now grows. The wooden observation deck that’s roughly half-way along the road is worth a stop. One of the other interesting features are the signs that point out where lava flows from the various Kilauea eruptions can be seen, especially those from the 1960s-1980s.
