At the Ipswich Museum 400 years of history surround you at every turn. Our extensive collections of fine and decorative art celebrate the historical and architectural significance of Ipswich. The Ipswich Museum is located near the town center of Ipswich, Massachusetts - approximately 30 miles northeast of Boston. Ipswich was founded in 1633 and is well known for its early 17th century architecture - 58 homes built prior to 1725 are still in existence today. Our museum is anchored by two significant properties: the 1677 Whipple House and the 1800 Heard House, as well as a 17th century reproduction house, the Alexander Knight House. Both the Whipple and Heard properties are filled with original architectural detail, furnishings, and artifacts that give visitors an intimate glimpse into the lives of early Ipswich residents. The Museum is open to the public for guided tours from May through October. Please call ahead for the most up-to-date tour schedule.

    Lovely people!
We stopped to see the current exhibition of Arthur Dow's work and stayed for a tour of the rest of the museum and the other houses. Though things are in need of a little bit of dusting, and perhaps some conservation work (especially the paintings) it was a fun place. We learned a lot about Ipswich history and the people who worked there and gave us the tours were knowledgeable, friendly and just really fun to learn from. It's a great place!

    Educational and interesting tour
We drove into town after hours in a car from Philly. After a quick meal at The Choate Bridge Pub, we walked towards the museum and discovered they were in the last few hours of an EVENT! We received personal tours of the Museum, the Whipple house and the Knight house. The ladies giving the tour (especially the one who took us to the Whipple & Knight house) were engaged in their subject and we learned from each of them. I've been wanting to visit these houses for a little over 10 years, so it was great to be able to have a personal tour! There was a little confusion about another tour goer - I felt a bit bad for her as the guide seemed a bit suspicious of her (inquiring from the other worker whether she had paid?). It was a little odd. That was the only critique - my guess as things were a little looser since it was an event with fair tents and such.
