Historic Salem

My husband and I took the tour this summer. The grounds are beautiful and the tour guides were very passionate about the mill. They were very informative and the tour included videos and pictures documenting the mill from the time it was in disrepair to its current state. After the tour you are welcome to walk the grounds.

Interesting Restored Mill with Original Equipment
This restored mill, operated by local volunteers, is a great place to stop for a look at nineteenth-century rural milling and the various small-industry uses of water power. Drawing its water source from an emerging subterranean stream channeled by a clever pipe and valve system to turn the wheel, this mill could process corn and wheat, and on a second level could engage a gear to turn machines to card wool. With largely original and still-operable equipment, it is an outstanding example of local industry in rural America. The grounds also include some nice walking/hiking trails, which pass by an 1824 cemetery used by several generations of the family that owned the mill and land. The volunteers are knowledgeable and enthusiastic about their projects, and are very pleased to explain and show off what they have so carefully restored and cared for. It's a little of-the-beaten path, but worth a stop!

A Unique and Wonderful Historical Treasure-Bring Your Family Now!
Beck's Mill is the oldest mill in Indiana (1808). It has been saved and restored to working order. It is staffed by knowledgeable volunteers who are very friendly and have interesting stories to tell. The mill itself has two floors (milling on the bottom and wool carding and spinning on top). The mill has a great little gift shop and sells yellow and white cornmeal as well as grits (all three ground by Beck's Mill). The area around the mill is filled with flowers, trees, and unique landscaping. There is a cabin to tour, and also six trails through the 70 acres behind the mill that you can hike. The trails are well marked and are the equal of trails you would hike in state parks. My family's experience here was great, and we plan to go back again. I highly recommend this place for families, history buffs, and travelers in general. This is an Indiana treasure.
