Highlight of our Otavalo visit

The Living Otavalo Museum was created in 2011 to preserve the culture of the indigenous Otavalenos. The museum is situated in what used to be a Spanish Hacienda in 1821. In 1958, the building was founded as the textile factory of San Pedro, where many indigenous people were forced to work in conditions similar to slavery. The historic architecture is preserved today in the museum. Currently, the Living Museum exhibits indigenous customs, live demonstrations of traditional weaving with the back strap, and the architecture that still exists from 1820.

Best way to learn about the people of Otavalo!
We had a great and most interesting visit! We had an excellent guide with lots of passion and knowledge. We learned a lot about the history and the traditions of the indiginous of Otavalo. He showed and demonstrated for us music, ceremonies and crafts. It makes the visit to the area much more meaningfull once you get to know the story of the interesting people who live there. Highly reccomended!

Interesting and educational collection of indigenous history
We were given a personalized tour of this small museum and the amount of information and history of the Kichwa people is amazing. The setting is in an old abandoned factory that employed Kichwa weavers years ago, so this added a poignant reminder of their historic place and value in Ecuador. Very moving.....highly recommend a visit!
