Volo Bog State Natural Area, Illinois, United States

4.5 (46 reviews) Friday: 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM Spent Ranking #1 in Lake County Nature & Wildlife Areas

Nature lovers heaven

This is a unique State Natural Area that was created when the Wisconsin Glacier retreated over 12,000 years ago. Many see it as a wonderful place to hike the great trails but it is so much more than that. It is a wonderful location for bird enthusiasts, it has an amazing assortment of wildflowers (in season) and other wetland plants you are unlikely to see at most State or National Parks. They have an outstanding staff and the Bog tours, scheduled bird walks, naturalist hiking tours and astronomy groups are scheduled on a regular basis. Be sure to call ahead if you want to join one of the organized groups or just show up if you would like to check it out yourself. This is a "must see" for the nature lover that is willing to look a bit closer to everything that is available at this fabulous State Natural Area.. and it is all free.

    A Rare Environmental Treasure
It’s rare to find an open-water Tamarack bog as far south as Volo Bog; it’s an ecosystem more typical of the North Woods. Excellent trail markers, along with a superb nature center, explain all about the natural history of bogs and the special plants and animals that inhabit them. We were lucky to arrive in time to take our walk with a guide, who was so informative. There are different interesting things to see at every time of year. There is also a nicely stocked small nature shop, and the Friends of Volo organize a variety of events and activities.

    Amazing find
I grew up in McHenry and had never even heard of this amazing place. My cousin's British cousins told us about it when they visited recently. I figured if someone from the UK had heard about it and enjoyed it so thoroughly, it would be worth looking at. And indeed it is! A very manageable walkway goes over and through the bog; a brochure points out things at various points on the numbered stops. This walk is a .5- mile loop. There is a much longer one around the perimeter but my companion could not manage a long walk so we did this one. Even so, we spent about 3 hours there, between this loop and the interpretative center.
