Vandalia Statehouse State Historic Site, Illinois, United States

History worth stopping for!!
It was time to take a break from driving, so when I saw the sign for a National Historic Site in Vandalia, we got off the interstate and drove into town. Actually this was one of the few Lincoln sites we had never visited. Although it was too late on this Saturday afternoon for a tour, we still parked the car and walked around the grounds of this awesome historic building, peeked in the windows, checked out all the statues and historic markers on the grounds. Awesome to know about the Madonna of the Plains honoring all the mothers who braved the trip westward in covered wagons. And the historic National Road that ran westward from Cumberland, Maryland and ended in Vandalia.

Piece of Illinois history
Nicely maintained historical sight. My husband and I did the self guided tour which was very informative. We learned quite a bit about early Illinois government and were able to walk on the same floor boards as Abraham Lincoln. It is well worth taking a half an hour to visit. Statehouse is free to tour but donations are apprecisated.
