Exodus of Nauvoo

This is the trail that the members of the early pioneer took when they were driven from their homes by mobs, threatening to kill them and their families. Along the trail are quotes from journals and letters of some of these early Saints as they left there homes and the temple they had sacrificed so much for to construct. Their courage and faith is unbelievable and inspiring.

One of the most soul-stirring sites in old Nauvoo
The Trail of Hope is the point where thousands of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints waited in line for their turn to leave their homes in Nauvoo, Illinois, and cross the Mississippi River into the insecurity and dangers of the Iowa Territory and the unsettled American West, thus beginning their epic migration to their new home in Utah. Located at 505 Parley Street, west of Granger Street, it is one of the most soul-stirring sites in old Nauvoo. It is a 1/2-mile lightly trafficked out and back trail primarily used for walking and is accessible year-round. Visitors can walk along a split rail fence and read 30 plaques containing selected writings and quotations reproduced from the personal journals of Mormon pioneers who recorded their feelings and experiences as they journeyed west. The exodus began on a cold day in February, 1846, when the Mississippi River was iced over and continued for months. Stand on the bank of the river and imagine how the Mormons came down the road, one family at a time, gazed across the river and began one of the most extraordinary journeys in history.
