Thebes Bridge, Illinois, United States

4.5 (2 reviews) Spent < 1 hour Ranking #2 in Thebes Bridges

Picturesque

View from the courthouse area is wonderful. Our view was from the river below. There is a road that goes under the train bridge that has high arches and it a good spot for photo op. Unfortunately our batteries were dead. :(

    Impressive railroad bridge. Historical treasure!
The Railroad Bridge at Thebes was opened in 1905. It was built by The Southern Illinois and Missouri Bridge Company, which incorporated in 1900 for the purpose of building it. The bridge replaced the cumbersome railroad ferry which operated between Cairo Illinois and Bird's Point Missouri for several years prior. It is the only railroad bridge across the Mississippi River between St. Louis Missouri and Memphis Tennessee. The bridge is constructed of steel, of the box girder design. The approaches consist of an impressive array of concrete arches. Two sets of parallel tracks are supported by the bridge.
