Tampier Lake Boating Center, Illinois, United States

Nice lake

Nice lake in the Chicago burbs, good for fishing, boating, canoeing, paddleboarding and kayaking. Also good for picnicking. Free to launch your own or you can rent by the hour at the boating center. Not a very peaceful retreat as it's up against 2 busy roads and sits under the midway airport glidepath. But it a great lake to learn boating on as it's not that deep. It's well overfished as most urban lakes are so good luck. No gas motors allowed here.

    Great Find
Tampier Lake is a pretty and quiet Cook County Forest Preserve site with plenty of parking and lots of trees surrounding a wide lake. It seems like a great place for a picnic or family reunion or a morning of fishing. Our group of eleven got there at 8:45 AM to rent kayaks. Each single kayak costs $15/hour ($12 on Mondays). Double Kayaks and canoes, etc are available. Though it was hot a nice breeze blew across the lake, making some choppiness and putting a bit of challenge into it while kayaking into the wind. It was fun to paddle around half the lake and then drift. There is some wildlife to view: cormorants, gulls, jumping fish, other birds, and turtles. Otherwise the wooded shores have little to see. The staff was friendly and helpful and not too picky about getting the kayaks back in exactly one hour. An hour was plenty for us, but others might want to take 2 hours to circle the entire lake. Bring water, a hat, sunscreen and a change of dry clothes (the paddles drip onto you.) The small shop has a few snack and water to purchase. They may also have bait for the fishermen.

    Boating and Fishing
Sometimes, it's just about the adventure. Getting out to Tampier is uncomplicated. The park is family oriented. It offers a wide variety of water "craft" rentals at reasonable cost. There's a bait and tackle shop and they sell snacks too. The fishing is just "ok". I caught a bunch of too-small yellow cats. I still enjoyed myself, because it was about the adventure.
