Shoal Creek Conservation Area, Illinois, United States

Outstanding rare nature preserve!

Litchfield has a rare treasure at their doorstep! This area was noted decades ago by German immigrant Henry Eilers to contain some of the rarest untouched prairie vegetation. He worked hard to protect this natural heritage, which now is enjoyed by many, and left as a legacy for the future. With over 700 species of plants and 70 kinds of butterfly, this 250+acre natural wonderland is nature enthusiasts paradise. There is a box by the entrance which contains a map of the area and description of some of the flora and fauna you will find. The trails are well marked. But bring some good walking shoes or hiking boots. It might be central Illinois, but this place has some steep terrain. And if you're lucky, you may even spot a bald eagle or two, who roost in the preserve.

    Beautiful Park Trail Area
In this area Lake Lou Yeager is a beautiful place to go to relax. Since I live so close, I frequently go out to the lake to enjoy the day. One of my favorite things to do is to walk the trails near the lake. There are two trails, A and B, which are my favorites. They are short loops with plenty of fauna and wild woodlands to meander through. Neither is especially strenuous. There are hills and you need to watch your step. I simply enjoy being able to rest along the trails on the benches. There is fishing and boating on the lake which is another thing I like to watch. There is also a swimming area with lifeguard and shower house. They recently added an equestrian campgrounds to the park. This park has campgrounds for all sorts of campers. Even some cabins for those not ready for tent or RV camping. There are shower house and restrooms. I would encourage all to come to Lake Lou Yeager to enjoy the outdoors. It is right outside of town close to shopping, restaurants and entertainment. As I said I live near the lake so I go year round to enjoy all the seasons. Check out the Lake Lou Yeager website and Litchfield Chamber of Commerce for information on the lake and happenings around town.
