Nice out of the way park for a getaway

Very nice well kept park with beautiful lake for fishing. Big campground with wooded or lakefront sites. Don’t miss the pokanoka cafe onsite by the marina! Their food is delicious and priced well for the portions . They also have ice cream and cookies for your sweet tooth. It’s family ran and friendly service . Their meat is sourced from their own farm - the pokanoka burger is yummy as is everything on menu can’t go wrong! They have indoor and outdoor dining overlooking lake which adds to the atmosphere. There is also a camp store and fishing/bait shop at the park . If that isn’t enough the town of Rochelle is only 1/2 hrs away with train viewing platform and multiple restaurants.

    Fall Camping
We have been to Shabbona a few times, and have always had a great time! We really enjoy their pontoon boat rentals and fishing. The view from our site was great. Appreciated the little path behind our site that lead to the water. My kiddos enjoyed hiking throughout and catching frogs. Our hosts were awesome! Always saw them driving around, stopping to help people back their campers in if needed, and offered to take my garbage bag as we were walking to the garbage. I was disappointed that the water was already turned off (the lady at the store said she thinks it was due to covid??). It was also disappointing that the camp store closed on a Saturday, didn't give notice that the last day to buy firewood was on Friday, and then it would be first come, first serve. Because of the water/campstore closing I did give it 4 stars instead of 5. My husband said the latrines in Canvasback Cove were "decent". The main shower house with flushing toilets was clean. Sites are not very private, but the fall colors made up for it. We did name the tree our camper was under "baby spider tree". Oddly, our last day we woke up to TONS of baby spiders all over our campsite dangling from the tree… pretty gross, but we can laugh about it now, lol. Overall, we will be back next spring since it is a close campground. May try a campsite in the other circle.

    A nice weekend getaway
This campground was very nice and a short distance from Chicago. I made our reservations online and check in was easy. We had 138 in Casselback Cove. It was partly sunny which was nice. The site itself is where the road splits and there was a lot of traffic. The sites were a nice size However, with the location of the firepit, we were unable to utilize our awning and screened in attachment to our pop up. The firepits were very large cement circles with no grate to cook, so make sure you bring your own or a grill. The campstore was well stocked and had most of what you needed. There is a grocery store in town but the meat selection is poor at best. The meat did not look fresh and careful when picking out cold salads in the cooler. The potato salad had a sell by date sticker over an expired older sticker. Best to bring in your own food. We went on a hike on the trails and ended up accidentally hiking more 10 miles. Forgot our map and one trail connected to another and so on. We ended up going around the entire lake. Not clearly marked. So take your map! We had a great time and the camp hosts were very friendly. Oh.. yeah the toilets near our site were pit toilets and were surprisingly clean. The showers and flush toilets were not far and were okay. Bring your own soap to wash your hands. None in bathroom,!
