Route 66 Shield Mural, Illinois, United States

5.0 (33 reviews) Spent < 1 hour Ranking #4 in Pontiac Points of Interest & Landmarks

Southern Illinois is one of the best parts of Rte 66 and Pontiac has the most information and sites except Springfield.

One would think that Chicago would be the Holy Grail of Route 66 in Illinois, but not so. Chicago marks the beginning and the end, but Pontiac is the soul of the road and one of the best museums on the entire journey across the Western United States. If you only had one or two places to stop in Illinois, Pontiac would be number one on your list. The guide books describe in detail the museum, the school bus, and the murals. Pontiac has done an exceptional job of collecting memorabilia and documenting the Mother Road. Plan on a couple hours at least especially if this is just a quick stop up or down Interstate 55 which is just a few minutes away.

On the back of the museum, this is a great mural, even attracting a couple in an open topped Mustang to pose in front of it. We then walked round an almost deserted town (it was a Sunday) looking at as many of the other murals as we could find. They are breath-taking and it’s good exercise too.

The Route 66 Shield mural is located on the back wall of Illinois Route 66 Hall of Fame Museum. The mural is beautifully done and well-maintained. There are also several smaller (but equally impressive) murals on the backs of the buildings on the opposite side of the parking lot. If you’re passing through the Pontiac area, I highly recommend taking an extra 15 minutes to stop by and see them.
