For a museum of its size, the Rockford Art Museum has an extensive permanent collection as well as being able to attract visiting exhibitions.

Wonderful art clases
Daughter had the opportunity to go with friends and take an art class. I drove and was able to observe. Instructor was very good and really challenged the kids

Very modern art
This was a very small museum, with mostly modern art. We went with our 2 year old and found it to be very sparsely filled with art installations. There wasn't very much on display from any other periods or styles...a wall covered with barbed wire and ripped-up tires was the main display, while other pieces were a stack of suitcases and some fancy glass bottles. If you are a fan of modern art installations and local artists, this is your place. If you like a large, traditional art museum with more historic pieces and lots of time periods (like armor and impressionism), then head to the Art Institute in Chicago.
