Awesome surprise

What a great tribute to the king of comedy! Centralized in downtown Peoria is this fantastic sculpture of Mr. Pryor. Quick stop in adjacent parking lot.

    A Tribute to Richard Pryor
It seems just proper to visit this memorial to a famous local comedian Richard Pryor (1940 - 2005). The statue is located downtown Peoria, on SW Washington St. A famous sculptor Preston Jackson was the artist who created this statue. It is the same artist who did Irv Kupcinet memorial in Chicago. The sculpture is very memorable. These days, it is also decorated with the sign of current times - a big pink heart. I liked the statue, but in terms of overall proportions, it probably would have looked much better in a different location, than on the street, undergoing a drastic renovation of some large, dark, old buildings that, in a way, may influence the perception of this statue.

    Statue of a Comedic Icon
Okay, sure, Richard Pryor's personal life was a train wreck. Most comedian's are. Was he a good person? Reading about him, all I can say is, sometimes he was. Sometimes he was a pain in the butt. But you can not deny the impact that he had as a comic. He was a legend in his field. I like when people that rise above their terrible life and make something of himself and it's nice that some get honored in their home town.
