Piasa Bird, Illinois, United States

4.0 (5 reviews) Spent Ranking #15 in Alton Historic Sites • Ancient Ruins • Mysterious Sites

Historic and massive version of a "Thunderbird".

A very quick stop but a lot of bang for your buck. While it is a replica and located on a different limestone cliff, it is still beside the river and you can imagine what people back then thought as they floated by the river and saw this massive painting which is still a wonder to behold.

    Interesting
If you’re in Alton, go and see this painting. It’s massive and over the bluffs of the Mississippi River. The Illini believed that the Piasa bird was real. When white explorers came up the river for the first time, the bird is what they saw on the cliffs above. Illini warriors were terrified of the bird and shot their arrows at it. While this painting is a replica, it’s still a site to behold.

Very interesting stop along the Great Rivers Scenic Route
This is a very interesting stop on the beautiful stretch between Alton and Grafton. The history (and legend) of the bird is very interesting, to say the least. I only wish the cave was still open so we could go in there too. Make sure you look up the history of this bird and read the sign in front. Very interesting...
