Lincoln Douglas Debate Square, Illinois, United States

4.5 (62 reviews) Spent Ranking #2 in Freeport Points of Interest & Landmarks

Important Historical Site

For anyone interested in Lincoln history or United States history, a 15 minute stop at the park in Freeport is a necessity. Besides the statues, there are a number of plaques which describe the momentous day in 1858 when the Illinois Senate debate took place. Beyond that, you can also sense how history changed because of this debate. Nicely done and easy parking on street or at adjacent library.

    History in a Park
Beautiful display and tribute of the Lincoln Douglas debate. This is the second location that I have visited. Lovely statues, nice signplex displaying different events, and beautiful trees. Also, right next to the ice cream shop which is a plus.

A stroll through this park at dusk ....
We enjoyed walking about in this little square. The statues were very well done and there were plaques about that shared newspaper reproductions, political cartoons, etc., from the time of the famous debate. Reading the history of the events that took place here really drove home how important this area was during the years before and after the Civil War. One of the plaques even had audio, with a narrator recreating a portion of debate.
