Hidden Little Gem

Visited Lilacia Park in Lombard one afternoon the last week of July. It is a gem of a lovely spot in downtown Lombard. Though it was past the blooms for Lilacs, there were a few stragglers still in nice bloom. Also, there were lots of other flowers, plants, and a pond with fountain to enjoy. The garden itself is a lovely place with easily walkable paths. There were quite a few photo sessions in progress taking in the nice scenery. It was peaceful except for the occasional train that went by. Surprisingly, the only map of the park was kind of hidden out of the way at the Coach House building. I am sure Lilacia Park would be a much lovelier place to visit when the Lilacs (and Tulips, I understand) are in bloom in May.

First visit to wonderful Lilacia Park. Wish we’d heard it before.
Lilacs are typically in full bloom in the first 2 weeks of May, right around Mother’s Day. Friends knew of our fondness for this particular flowering shrub told us to check out Lilacia in Lombard. I’m glad we did. This public park more than lived up to its name. While there were some lilacs that were just past prime, most were at peak and some were just starting to bloom. Some were more fragrant than others. One could argue the park could have also been named Tulipia Park, so impressive were the tulip flowerbeds. It was a perfect place for a Mother’s Day visit but it should be good for another week or two in terms of the bloods. I do not know what the park’s gardeners are planning for after the lilacs and tulips have passed but if the current display is any indication they will have many eye-catching horticultural displays for the rest of the warm part of the year. We will definitely be back.

Don't just go when in bloom, go whenever!
This is one of the highlights if you live in lombard or in the lombard area. They hold the lilac parade in May while everything is in full bloom within the park. Its a stunning array of lilacs and other assorted flowers. The aroma walking through is amazing. Please note that you don't have to just go when things are in bloom. Lilac park holds many events. My favorite is the christmas event in park. When its warm, bring a blanket, a camera, a picnic basket, and thank me later.
