LaSalle County Historical Society & Museum, Illinois, United States

Excellent Museum

Grew up in LaSalle County and heard lots of history but just found out there was a historical museum. It's definitely worth checking out. We were only in town during the week so we contacted ahead of time and were able to be given a tour by reservation. There is a lot of great information here, more than you would expect. The stuff from the original inhabitants up until the 1800s is in one building, and the 1900s is in another building. The workers are great and full of knowledge. I highly recommend this museum to see lots of historical artifacts and hear the meaningful history of this small county.

    Awsome museum
Great little museum. Very informative past info on the local area and beyond only five dollars to enter and you get access to two museums. The staff are kinda unfriendly at the first little one a young girl but the guy working the second one with the coal museum. Was very friendly and helpful. We came like five minutes before closing he told us please don't rush take your time it's ok we appreciated that very informative history here liked it.

Historical Smorgasbord of Utica & Surrounds
We visited the old and new museum in Utica, IL and thus ended up with a smorgasbord of local history. I was particularly enamored with the wedding dress in the old museum which could have been made for a child bride. Truth is, people were sooo much smaller back then. In the same museum I read a horrifying tale of two sisters who avoided massacre but not capture by a local Indian tribe, the Illini, I think. One sister recalled seeing her mother's scalp being stretched before she swooned away. I got a great sense of prairie life in this museum. My one complaint, I found the noise of the ongoing video's distracting plus I wasn't sure how to start or stop them or even if one could. The story of the Radium Girls in the new museum was horrifying. What I want to know is, why was the owner of Westclox not tried for murder? Also, I found the exhibit and account of the coal mining tragedy in Cherry, IL, fascinating. These were the things that were interesting to me. There were so much more. Check it out.
