Lake Renwick Heron Rookery Nature Preserve, Illinois, United States
4.5 (12 reviews) Friday: Spent 1-2 hours Ranking #1 in Plainfield Nature & Wildlife Areas
Great area for bird watching
If you want a quiet place to see some wonderful birds, this is it. The walking trails are maintained and you can watch the cranes swoop in without disturbing them. We like to take binoculars to check out the small island inhabitants.

This is a seasonal venture
This is only open certain months, so check online before making plans to go. There is a path that leads you back to where you can see the herons from the shore.

Cool to See - Right in your backyard
We have driven by this many times, and found out in the Plainfield Paper that they were open one of the weekends during breeding season. My daughter started her birdwatching app, so we decided to go. When we go there, there was someone to greet us and sign us in and explain some of the history of the place. Then we walked down the path, and there were "rangers" at a pilivion with some spotting scopes for us to use. We saw the three most prominent birds roosting out on the wooden platforms. Cormorants (I always thought these were loons), White Egrets, and young blue heron. So we observed for a while, and walked back along a different path. It doesn't take long, something you can do in 20 minutes. Just go out and take a look.
