Enjoyed camping in "pencil tree" forest

My family stayed on site 21 in our popup and had a great time. We LOVED the pencil tree forest. There are only a handful of campsites w electric in this circle of trees. Although these types of trees don't offer a lot of privacy I still enjoyed it. Our site was a short walk down to the lake which we used for fishing. There is a water pump and latrine in the circle. We did not go in the shower house so can't attest to the cleanliness.

    Great Family Hiking!
Beautiful walk through some easy trails that are fun for the kids! There’s even a park for the kids to play on. I highly recommend stopping to eat at Red Earth Cafe when you visit!! It’s right on the water with great scenery. Amazing home-cooked food that will not disappoint!

Beautiful any time of the year
If you are approaching the park fron the south on #78, you will notice an incline to higher ground, which the park sits st the crest of. This is the the Sauk Trail. American bison used this as a travel way for their migrations. If you are approaching the park from the north, the land was once a vast boggy marsh where many mastodon bones and teeth have been found. The park itself really has something for everyone. Birdwatching, hiking, camping, fishing, hunting, and even just a slow drive around the lake. Theres a boat rental, restaurant and vending machine for soda at the boat house. In springtime there are purple, white and yellow violets along the road around the lake. In June you can watch the catfish jumping and rolling around in the shallow end of the lake. In fall, take a walk through the Singing Bird picnic area, where the leaves and acorns are crisp beneath your feet. In winter, go for a walk on the road around the lake that is closed to vehicular traffic for the season. I've had deer walk right out in front of me on such walks.
