Very nicely done historic site.

Stroll through the John Deere Historic Site and see where John Deere got his start. Our guides are very knowledgeable and will guide you through the buildings or if you choose you can venture on your own. We have a blacksmith working in the shop daily producing items for our gift shop. We also have a covered pavilion if you wish to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy on the site. We are wheel chair accessible and it is all free.

    Meeting John Deere
Good historical movie shown over the John Deere blacksmith worksite the Deere family home , and a reconstructed blacksmith forge.. Judy, the site supervisor and our guide, has terrific people skills, and appealed to all ages in our group. The experience makes a great case for American traditions, for both liberals and conservatives. A 3 minute walk or ride around Grand Detour is also a delight. Phil

    worth a visit
Very interesting to learn about John Deere himself and see what his life was like, a real rags to riches story. Sad that the Deere family no longer runs the company. You get to see the foundation of the site of his first plow factory, a blacksmith demo to see what Deere's daily work was like, and his home where he lived with his family at the time he invented the steel plow. They do a good job of rotating visitors between the different exhibits so you don't have to wait for a tour. Will also stay late to make sure you get to see everything, not many places will. Best of all, it's free.
