winter visit
This extraordinary forest preserve is worth a visit any time of the year. Becuase of this season's heavy snowfalls, not all of the paths had been cleared. You could tell from tracks in the snow that this did not stop visitors with appropriate footwear from striking out across the terrain. During this particular visit, ice skating was forbidden, but ice fishing was going on. I couldn't resist taking photos of groups of fisherpeople scattered across the lake -- some drilling holes as I watched. The thaw is coming. Because this property is so large and has so much parking, it is very easy to social distance during your visit. Beautiful and quiet
Independence Grove is a lovely large area with a lake in the middle--beautiful in any type of weather. It is usually quiet so be aware that you can't bring your dog in. Also, during busy periods, the gate checks to see if you are from Lake County (free) or not (small charge). Boats can be rented in the summer and there is a small beach. The paths hook up with others so you can ride/walk/run south or north. Part of the interior paths are paved which make it easy for a stroller. worth the trip!!!

Beautiful Place!!
Totally worth spending time here! Gorgeous vision for an old rock quary. You don't feel like you are right in the middle of the suburbs. Connects to countless miles of bike and walking trails both north and south. Make a day of it!! Can't go wrong here!!
