Route 66 Oddity
It's really just a giant statue on a sad former Main Street strip along Route 66 that was bypassed by the interstate. But it's part of the quirky charm of driving Route 66 that shouldn't be missed. Unfortunately, on the day we were there, none of the restaurants or businesses were open (could be Covid restrictions). There's also a pretty mural high on the wall to the left of the statue and a lovely Seth Thomas clock on the next corner (town square).

Not So Little Piece of Americana
Another one of those quirky sights to see while traveling along the old Route 66 path. This attraction is one of the old “Muffler Men” that were so popular back in the day. The statue used to stand in front of Bunyon’s Hot Dogs, which is why this Paul Bunyon has a slightly different name and is holding a hotdog (versus his traditional axe). There’s a sign next to the statue that provides even greater detail about Paul’s history and eventual relocation from Cicero to Atlanta.

Classic Route 66 sight
This 20ft tall representation of Paul Bunyan holding a giant hot dog instead on an axe, originally stood on the roof of Bunyon's hot dog stall in Cicero, Illinois before making the move to Atlanta in 2003 following the closure of the stand. Deliberately misspelt to avoid legal issues and now amusingly devoid of context, this giant figure is an icon of the Illinois stretch of Route 66 and is well worth the short detour to see. Atlanta is also one of the nicest Route 66 towns we encountered between Chicago and St Louis, so budget in a bit of extra time to look around the place.
