Horseshoe Lake State Park, Illinois, United States

Excellent birding; other activities, too

This is a well-known birding site, especially when waterfowl are present. We had an enjoyable day even in 90 F + temperatures. There were many graceful Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets, American White Pelicans, Double-Crested Cormorants (and one Neotropical Cormorant), Black-crowned Night-Herons, and many passerine species, including Eurasian Tree Sparrow. The park is well-kept. It's a very pleasant place for outdoor activities.

Stayed here for one night when visiting St Louis. Its about 20 minutes out but it's quiet and secluded. No hook ups but for $8 a night you don't expect that much. The camping area is about 2 miles post the entrance and is set in a secluded area. The grass is kept cut and firepits and picnic tables are at all sites. We were one of 3 campers that night. The lake is supposed to offer good fishing opportunities.

    Great place for locals!
Large lake that is known for duck hunting and fishing. There is a bait shop on site that is open during the summer. Lots of ducks, geese, and assorted water fowl and wild life. Nice scenic drive around the lake. There is a boat ramp off to the right at the end of the lake. Plenty of space to park truck and trailer. There are trails for bikes and walking. During summer months the camp site area is open. Spaces for tents and campers. There is also a restroom and showers in the camping area. The camping area is very isolated from the rest of the park. There are also large pavilions and picnic areas scattered throughout the park. Lots of family reunions and birthdays are held here. I wouldn't drive out of my way to visit, nice place to visit if your in the area and want to fish or duck watch.
