Grant Park, Illinois, United States

4.5 (264 reviews) Spent Ranking #4 in Galena Parks

Excellent Park

If you go to Main Street in Galena, you must walk up the steps by the river and cross over to Grant Park. It is high on a hill with a bunch of walking paths, a statue of Ulysses S Grant, a beautiful fountain, a gazebo, and some historic cannons on display. The view of downtown Galena is fantastic. There are plenty of benches to just sit and enjoy the views. It is one of the nicest small parks I have ever been to.

Nice Park with a Good View of Galena
Grant Park, located across the Galena River from the city's downtown, is an outstanding place to relax, enjoy a picnic, and survey the landscape. The park offers something for everyone and includes a view of the city, benches, picnic tables, a gazebo, several cannons, a statue of General and President U.S. Grant, a fountain, a playground, and a basketball court. For those who wish to see Galena on foot, the park is an ideal place to start. Free all-day parking in a large lot is located two blocks south across the tracks from the Galena Depot. The Grant House is a short uphill walk. Also, a pedestrian bridge leads directly to downtown, which is filled with old buildings, shops, restaurants, and bars.

When you need a quiet moment
On my two day-trip visits to Galena, Grant Park proved to be a perfect spot to retreat from the buzz of shopping and store hopping and all the activity of Main Street. In the shade of the beautiful old trees, benches face the river, where one might catch a glimpse of the kayakers or paddle boarders . Even on a hot day, it's a spot to take a few relaxing breaths while listening to the mellow sounds of water flowing in the fountain. The park also offers a covered picnic area, a small pavilion, and a basketball court. History buffs can tour and read about the gun collection. The park is minutes away from downtown across a scenic footbridge. It is also obscured by the large embankment, so head east and head for the stairs going uphill.
