Testament to Free Speech
By visiting the monument you will be inspired at the heroism displayed by Elijah P. Lovejoy in the pursuit of free speech. When reading the story of Elijah and his untimely end, it will give you a sense of the turmoil embracing that period of time. The adjacent cemetery is a great place to walk through also. There are graves there dating back to the Spanish War and a couple from the sinking of the "Lusitania".

Elijah Lives
The story is sad and heroic. This man gave his life for free speech. Use it wisely. The monument holds a secret. After you've seen it contact me here for the mystery.

See Local and National History Off the Beaten Path
Most people see the monument coming across the Lewis & Clark Bridge into Alton from Missouri, but few actually go see it up close. There is no parking lot, only on street parking and it is not handicap accessible because there are no ramps. However, for history buffs this is a great free stop. There are informative plaques as well as the monument itself. You can view and access the old cemetary located behind the monument which by itself is worth a stroll. Even if you are not a fan of history, the whispering wall effect the monuments bench has is a cool architectural design to see.
