Edgar County Courthouse, Illinois, United States

Definitely a Historical Gem!

Really neat out-of-the-way town for those who like this stuff--and we do. The whole town is quaint, but we spent most of our time at the courthouse grounds. The courthouse is pretty cool-looking, and apparently, Abraham Lincoln practiced law sometimes here. Several markers dot the grounds, including a couple to Abraham Lincoln, and a really cool historical marker commemorating Zion's Camp...a large body of Mormons traveling through Paris on their way to help fellow Mormons being persecuted in Missouri. There are also several historical buildings located in the extended town square and a very neat second hand store called Ella's Resale Shop right across the street.

    Historical Gem
Paris, the Edgar County seat, has this remarkable 1891 courthouse in the middle of the corn fields and prairies. It has beautiful Romanesque revival architecture, with beautiful paintings under its rotunda. A scene from " Merchant of Venice", "Israel Putnam's Ride", and "Valley Forge" are all located on the first floor. Upstairs is a grand painting of the Columbian Exposition by an as yet unknown artist. Perhaps the best known thing to look for is the star in the middle of the elevator floor marking the location of the legendary jack oak tree marking the original town of Paris. The grounds of the courthouse hold many memorials to soldiers, historical occasions, and the Circuit Ride of Abraham Lincoln.
