Unexpected Oasis

Our outing in I llinois strarted off with a big letdown when we visited the mounds on the other side of town, so my expectations were not high when we followed the signs off hwy 6 to Channahon State Park. I am happy to report that my expectations were greatly exceeded. In fact, it blew my socks off (now my feet are sunburned) ! Ours was the only car in the parking lot when we arrived at the parking lot (no entrance fee). immediately our gaze was drawn to a bridge and a dam and the surroundings. The I M canal and trail converge in a watery maze here at the confluence of the Du Page and Des Plaines rivers. Besides walking or jogging the canal trail in either direction, Channahon has a fairly large tent camping area, rest rooms, drinking fountains, playground, picnic tabes, a veterans memorial, and plenty of Kodak moments. Take a few minutes to turn off either I 80 or I 55 to visit this park. You'll be glad you did.

    Quiet spot
This state park is one of the stops to view a lock on the Illinois/Michigan canal. The park is a quiet place to have a picnic or just walk around or ride a bike to view the old lock and the nearby river. There is no charge for admission. One drawback is if you need to use a rest room. The stalls do not have doors and it is a pit toilet. Also, right now, some construction is ongoing.

Nice, but they should not install any more BLACKTOP
I have been to this area several times, since I do some fishing, ... years ago it used to have little dirt trails winding all the way around the area, which made it really "back to Nature!" ... Pristine! ,,, however during the last 3-4 years, "they" have decided to start paving most of these old Indian trails!! ,,, Really?? .... you need blacktop & pave in nature preserve areas??? ,,,, as a result, this has attracted a few ore visitors, & as a result, this has caused the wildlife to retreat into the wooded area. .... Before, when one would walk the dirt trails, it was very natural to just walk up to within 10-15 feet of deer, raccoons, turkeys, etc.,,,, however, not nowadays, you have to get off the blacktop, search some little dirt trail, and then you shall be rewarded with nice panoramic views & wildlife. NOTE: years ago I would have given this park an "Excellent" rating, but since all the paving has taken place I have been kind enough to give it an "Average" rating.
