We got up close to a family of elk

Seeing animals in a somewhat non-zoo setting is always hit or miss. Today, as we parked we saw the elk close to the parking lot along the trail. We were off and came upon three elk that were probably a family of a buck, doe and a youngster. They were near the fence, so my young granddaughter got a great look at them. One thing that we learned is that the elk in the pasture are not always the same elk, year after year. Apparently, a small percentage are rotated out to broaden the bloodline. A nice, inexpensive outdoor activity for kids and adults.

    Some days they're in the open and other days, they're not
    Thie Busse Forest Elk Pasture is a great place to kill some time while waiting to do something or even having a snack. Though the elk do come out in the open, it is hit or miss, and it was a miss today. The area is nicely kept up and there is a restroom near the entrance driveway.

    Great Place to Watch for Elk
    On Sunday afternoon, after the Bears game, quite a few people drove over to Busse Forest Elk Pasture. There were numerous cars parked there. While elk are not native to this area, they arrived by train over ninety years ago. William Busse was responsible for bringing elk to this area. Given its closeness to O’Hare International Airport, it is surprising that elk remain.
