Excellent Natural History Museum

This is a great natural history museum in downtown Rockford. The dinosaur section is a real standout. They have both a juvenile (complete) T Tex “Jane” skeleton and major sections of a Triceratops (Homer). Surrounding Homer are skulls of similar dinosaurs so you can see how they evolved. The littles also really liked the rainforest section that’s almost like walking through a real rainforest, complete with bugs & gators. There’s another area where the kids can crawl over kid size boxes & handle dinosaur toys & other interesting bits. We spent 2 hours there with a 2 & a 3 1/2 yo. Everything is very kid safe & friendly.

    Amazing Displays
We were totally surprised by the quality and depth of the displays in this museum. Their knowledge and work with dinosaurs make this a step above other museums of this type. Kids will love the first and third floors. If pressed for time, skip the second floor although the information on rocks and soil is informative for adults..

    Fun small museum
We stopped here fir a couple of hours in town overnight for a competition. It was a fun stop in winter. It was pretty empty and we had the place to our selves due to the winter time frame, but perfect by us! My 111yr old liked the exhibits and we perused for a couple hours the dinos and rocks. Parking was easy and free. The museum is located on a river walk which would be nice in warmer months. The place is clean, nice bathrooms. Cool dino exhibits. It is not overly large, but nice for what they have on the 3 floors. So live animals on one floor, nothing fancy. Little kids will definently love. I would bring my younger boys back for a future visit.
