Swedish settlement from 1846

Incredibly interesting Swedish settlement from 1846. Seeking religious freedom a group of Swedes followed their leader to America and through incredibly harsh times build a settlement in Bishop Hill. There are numerous sites to see including their old and primitive but lovely church, museums, art center (where they have broom makers, potters and weavers creating their wares in person). A wonderful and enlightening experience and great way to spend a day.

Swedish Heritage: enjoyed the town and the people who told us about the town so much
We found the town wonderful, the places that we open had very nice folks that gave us a wonderful explanation of their building and the town at that time. I enjoyed it very much, it was a day of 95+ degrees and people kept giving us water because we walked from the visitor center ( not knowing we could have driven into town). We enjoyed the visit to Bishop Hill visit.

    Learn-shop-eat!
Bishop Hill is small, laid back, peaceful, and has an interesting history. There are museums (free - but donation jars to help out!) that tell the history of the Swedish immigrants who established a colony here as they were seeking religious freedom. Volunteers at the three museums I went to were friendly and informative. No colorful, splashy signs to lore you into shops, but if you stroll and open doors there are fun shops to visit......and three great choices of places to eat lunch.
