Ambler's Texaco Gas Station, Dwight, Illinois, United States

Best old gas station on Route 66

After completing Route 66, I would rank Ambler's Texaco Gas Station as the best restored gas station museum. Restored because they've painted some things to make it look real nice, like the photo opps at the billboard to the side of the gas station. The pumps look clean and fresh. It's easy to picture time travelling in your mind due to how nice it looks. As you go along Route 66, you'll find all sorts of old gas stations or just the pumps, with varying conditions of decay or restoration. All of them are for display purposes only and are not functioning. There's a little store to help support the museum and there's even a Model T from 1914 that you can sit in for photos. (I marked travelled as solo because there's no family option w/o children. Some of us drive around our senior parents. That's family last time I checked.)

    Nicely Restored Station on 66
This was another great photo op for the car. The place was closed when I arrived, so I could park right at the pumps (which had an air bell that you drive over) and took pictures. There are all the usual Route 66 signs and information boards, plus, if you happen to be there when it is ope, there is a little museum inside with a car and other memorabilia. I could see a small gift shop too. I was a little bummed I missed it. There is a button to push that has really good information about the building, the town and what is in the nearby towns. I love that places are doing that. There are a few picnic tables you can relax at and what looks like is either going to be or was a lighted billboard at the back of the property. It will be a cool thing if they get it finished. This should be your #1 priority for a Route 66 stop in Dwight, but there are a few other places worth a look too.
