This site is something for the history lover especially if you are interested in local history and/or Civil War history. This site is what remains of the Civil War prison and although it is a sad story it does give one a true idea of the conditions of the Civil War. If you are interested in the Civil War or local history this is a must see.

read up first then visit here.
replanted blocks from further up the hill; best way to appreciate this very small exhibit would be to read about the prison, the Smallpox outbreak and the atrocities the prisoners experience here. quick stop

A little bit of history... little bit only
Easily missed, this tiny portion of Alton history is all that is left of the Alton prison. Stones from the original prison have been used in buildings all over town. Some even say they carry the souls of the departed which make Alton one of the most haunted towns in America
