Fascinating history lesson

Built in 1819 (the same year Alabama became a state) the home is not only a source of fine 19th Century furnishings and Federal style architecture but is also the home of poet and artist Maria Howard Weeden. Howard Weeden was born in the house in 1846. Except for the Civil War years when Federal officers occupied the home, Howard spent her entire life in the home. She is known as being one of the first artists to paint African Americans true to life during the years following the Civil War. Guests enjoy a guided history tour which transports them to a bygone era learning about architecture, Weeden art and life in the Antebellum South. Since the home is furnished with antiques and original art, tours are guided tours and last around an hour. Tours are offered twice a day, Tuesday through Saturday from 10 AM to 11AM and 1 PM to 2PM or by appointment. Please refer to the website for specific closed dates as the museum is also an event venue and is closed on dates that those events occur.

Worth your time… truly well done tour
This is one of the highlights of our recent visit to the Huntsville area . The director of the museum Mrs. James was our tour guide. Her enthusiasm, personality, and knowledge made this tour one of the best house tours I’ve ever had. Mary Howard Weeden is an incredible person and artist and is really worth learning about. The federal style architecture, period furnishings combined with the artist own works make this a very special tour. Check the website for tour times. $5 per person

    Beautiful home, Beautiful story!!
Gina is a GREAT tour guide! She is also the museum’s director. The story of (Miss) Howard Weeden, artist and poet with visual impairment, is amazing! The home has survived almost unchanged since 1819 (or thereabouts). There are several unusual features… but I won’t spoil it for you… take the tour and find them out! Stop at the Huntsville visitors center and get a discount coupon sheet for this and other sites in Huntsville. The Weeden house is also an event venue… LOVELY!!! Thanks, Gina!!!
