The objective for coming to this place for some chinese is to search for their ancestral roots. During the early Ming Dynasty, many people died as a result of war and natural disasters. However, Shanxi province was still heavily populated. Ministers proposed to the emperor (Zhu Yuanzhang) to forcibly transfer part of the population from Shanxi to the outlying provinces. The place "Da Huai Shu" (Locust Tree or Pagoda Tree) was the place where the registration was carried out and the people dispatched from here. There was a legend that people who do not wish to be sent off must come here to be registered. But when they arrived here they are arrested and tied up to be sent off. The toilets here are called "Jie Fang Shi" (Untie Room) because during that time, they were all tied up to prevent them from escaping. Families were split up in the process and sent to different places. It was a tragic and draconian policy. This place is also a major con job as they think of innovative ways to help you part with your money, so be careful.See more..
