Underwater Observatory Ship New Shakotan, Hokkaido, Japan

Beautiful tour

Great tour with beautiful views, some underwater action and the feeding of a flock of seagulls. Money well spent. The tour guide only speaks Japanese but that doesn't take away from the experience. Note that the experience is probably greatly dependent on the weather conditions.

    Pleasant surprise mini cruise
(early July-2015) It was a wonderful experience, getting to feed umineko (black tailed gull). Bread crumbs are provided by the cruise on our way back. The whole cruise takes 50 minutes. We were there early, n got to board the 2nd scheduled cruise for the day. There are a row of stall selling raw sea urchin (uni), squid, potato n dry, salted fishes close by. Food can be eaten there as well. Parking space is ample in the front of the ticketing office. Toilet facility on the side of the building. Highly recommended to visit in morning hours.

    Seagulls and Underwater views
The ride was really good. They have an underwater deck, which does not have a glass bottom but rather has square windows at knee level. One of the highlights of the trip was the seagull feeding. Bowls of bread strips were passed out and you could feed the seagulls from your hand. This was optional; you could also just sit inside the boat near the driver or in the lower deck. Seagulls came quite close but only at the end of the tour. Around 10 min before the call time a large tour bus with many people arrived, so I suggest entering the boat 11 or 12 minutes before call time to get good seats before the majority of the people arrive. Even if you do arrive after the tour bus comes (but before the call time of course) there are plenty of seats in the lower deck and some on the upper deck. The seats don't really matter, and we stayed on the lower deck for almost the entire ride apart from the seagull feeding. Around 10 minutes before the seagull feeding there are many beautiful rock structures which the boat passes by which are perfect for photos.
