The Beauty of Vertical Drop
We walked through the 30-meter long narrow low dark tunnel, and found ourselves at the top of the vertical drop. At our feet, there lay the Shimamui Beach with the sea of Shakotan blue. The difference in altitude between the observation platform and the beach was about 70 meters. The trail was steep and narrow. We kept communicating with our legs and feet, taking our return trip to the observatory into consideration. My wife gave up in the middle of the descent. I kept on dropping, and reached the stony beach. The clear and clean water of the Shakotan-blue sea was lapping at pebbles, stones, and rocks. Sea fowls were flying around the 60-meter-tall folding-screen-like huge rock. I wished I could be a seabird to fly back the vertical drop.

A place to rejuvenate
We visited in a small rainy day, we park our car, an old couple ready to leave, 3 of us were the only there; when we leave, a tour bus was reached. We walk pass the tunnel, it lead us to another world, lucky the rain was stop. We slowly walk down the stairs to the stone beach, there was a bit of rubbish, died sea urchin & many seaweeds. The whole area was smell of fresh seaweed, silent, a great place to rejuvenate your mind. We drive from Otaru, Shimamui Coast was our 1st station, after Cape Kamui we head to Niseko to stay a night for rest. Of course, not forget to eat super fresh urchin rice bowl before we leave Shakotan peninsula. My 6yo boy love to explore natural, we love this place. Just the young children need to be careful walk on the stone beach, & the steps to walk up was a bit hard for elderly. Well worth the drive, one of our highlight in our 3 weeks holiday in Hokkaido. Highly recommended & definitely will come again when we travel to Hokkaido. Thanks for the vote if you found this helpful :D

Beautiful Beach
First time visited this beach in winter, very few visitors. There are buses available from Otaru Bus Station, just check the bus schedule during the winter. Scenery is wonderful and should make a visit if you are in Otaru.
