Otokoyama Sakezukuri Museum, Hokkaido, Japan

Great place to learn about sake production - and taste some too!

We altered our travel plans so we could fit in a trip to this 'museum' and very glad we did. There is certainly plenty of information about the history and production of sake, but the highlight for us was seeing onto the factory floor. We were there at the right time to see quite a bit going on - including the stage where the rice is spread out. If you're not a sake connoisseur then having the opportunity to try a large range, from sweet to very dry, is brilliant. It helped my wife and I narrow our preferences - which luckily were the same! The friendly and helpful staff were happy to let us try any and all of the tasting bottles they had open - a range of about 12 types. Needless to say we bought some of the good stuff to take with us.

    Good Sake
This is a 320 yen bus ride from downtown Asahikawa. It's a nice museum with award winning sake tasting bar. The lady was very nice and gave us a few samples. Ask to take a photo with their hapi coats and bottles. Outside of brewery there is a couple of ponds with running water even though the temperature is below freezing. Many residents bring their empty bottles to fill with free water, The water is very good in Asahikawa which is a major ingredient to making sake. Don't forget to take a photo with the hapi coat, apron, head band, and sake bottles. Memorable moment.

    A great learning museum
The beautiful scenery at the front view of this sake museum already attracts its visitors. The warm welcoming from its staff a plus at the cold morning of our visit. We had a clear picture of the sake history and the process of its making. Visit this museum enlarge our knowledge. We had some sample tasting of its sake, but not the premium one, because visitors need to pay to taste. Well, you also have the opportunity to purchase magnificent sake sets, cups and others...
