Interesting

Great visit for children as they explain how money is produced and the history of Japan's currency. There is also a small gift counter at a corner before you leave.

    Interesting visit
We walked past the museum and decided to visit the museum. Entry is free and we learnt lot of the banking system in Hokkaido and Japan. The bank (now museum) was built at the equivalent of US$3700 at the time!! With the help of the staff, we understood the Yen security system (uv. Fine prints.) and how to prevent counterfeiting. We saw such details under the microscope as well.

Great exhibits, but limited information in English!
The Otaru Branch of the Bank of Japan is the home to a wonderful collection of exhibits detailing the origins of the Bank of Japan, as well as how it established itself, an exhibit on the printing of money and the vault of the Bank (open to the public). Being allowed to hold a fake pack of JPY 10m is a weird feeling - heavy, but a small pack, and seeing JPY 10m shredded is a sight to behold. However, most information is in Japanese, only the 3-page information booklet is translated. Go anyway for the entertaining sights and a 'view behind the scenes' of a National Bank.
