Must not miss this

Amazing place to learn more about the drift ice. We just arrived here from shiretoko where we saw all the drift ice coming in a few days ago. Its very informative to learn about this. The observatory at the top provides amazing views to the highlands of shiretoko as well as the ranges of akan-manshu. Loved the soft serve ice cream there as well. Overall a must not miss location.

Abashiri - many attractions to experience.
Abashiri is a well-known winter destination to see drift ice from the Arctic sea. But I am not a winter traveler. We were going to Shiretoko and decided to spend some time in Abashiri. Of all the places recommended for tourists, this was a unique experience to visit this museum. The importance of drift Ice was a valuable learning experience for me. Besides a walk through a room where the temperature is -30, was something I would never have a chance to experience.

    Virtual ice is nice
We went here after our planned ice breaker cruise through Abashiri’s drift ice was cancelled (no drift ice +big seas = no cruise; this was about a week after the season was scheduled to open). The museum is on a mountain outside town (local bus will take you there, or you can get a cab). The staff were very friendly and helpful. In terms of the attraction, the site offers spectacular views of the coastline and nearby mountains, aquariums with local sea creatures, a surround-vision video of the drift ice, and a room which replicates a winter’s day in Hokkaido (think minus 15) ... staff hand out wet hand towels to visitors who walk through the room, with instructions to swirl them through the cold air. The end result is that the towels freeze solid, which is pretty cool (sorry!)
