A very well reconstructed historic building

We visited this lovely building while staying in Hakodate. Set in a lovely park that is very historical. This is also the site of the Goryokaku Fort that was built back in the 1800s to protect the Magistrates Office . The work involved to reconstruct this huge building must have been immense and cost a fortune. All made from timber it must have been a major job just to source the trees. You have to pay to enter but it is worth it. Visit and read all the information available and think of the history this building has seen as Japan opened up trade to the rest of the world around 1870.

    Meticulously reconstructed building
The Magistrate's Office is a reconstruction of 1/3 of the original building, featuring halls and rooms that mostly fulfilled more public functions. Lots of effort have been poured into the 1:1 reconstruction, as evident in the rigorous use of historical photographs and archaeological evidence to determine even details like the number of roof tiles. The craftsmanship is noteworthy. Even the calligraphy works (assuming they are replicas) infused authentic Chinese brush strokes typical of that era. Highly impressed by the detailed documentation of the reconstruction process. It's a pity that some of the exhibits are not available due to COVID restrictions, and also not all information is translated.

    Statuesque Hakodate Magistrate's Office
For the architecture & history enthusiasts, the Hakodate Magistrate's Office (Bugyosho) is a restored government office run by samurai. It is quite a statuesque sight with the vibrant Autumn maples. You can take an inside tour (Admission Fee required) and the guide will take you through the various rooms and explain the history of the building.
