Edersee, Hesse, Germany

4.5 (271 reviews) Spent Ranking #1 in Waldeck Bodies of Water

Superb location with lots to do

I visited in the early afternoon, and parked in the cheap car park. I could hear the laughter of children playing in the facilities on the other side of the dam quite clearly - they sounded like they were having a fantastic time. A group on segways trundled past and several cyclists followed. The range of things to do was large. I walked over the dam, but the museum had been moved to a more distant location, so I didn't see that. There were a number of outlets for food and some pleasant gardens.

Great location for one or two days with kids
We have been at the Edersee three or four times now in total. Last trip was on Eastern 2014 with our two kids (2 and 5) and a friend. Even if it was crowded regarding cars and parking space it was a great day: We rent an e-boat for one hour, very relaxing. After that we checked the playground facilities at Strandbad Waldeck:Great and enough sitting facilities for making a pick-nick. After that we took the old - or ancient :-) - Bergbahn going up to Schloss Waldeck. That was so funny, such little cabins. My husband assume that the windows of the of the small cabins of 1961 must be the windows of the former VW Käfer. (4 EUR for a return ticket per adult) Finally we enjoyed the amazing, absolutely amazing view from the platform from Schloss Waldeck (free entrance). We saw that spot the evening before in the German movie "The Schlussmacher" of Matthias Schweighöfer. In the Schloss yard was a kind of snack bar. It was okay and offered cake and sausages with chips. And then: Down it goes again with the VW Käfer cabins :-) Finally we stopped at the "Sperrmauer, what a great construction. It offers a museum in the wall, we visited last time. Very interesting. On a flyer we saw that there are a lot of other sites and facilities which can be enjoyed at the Edersee region. Thus, we will be back for sure.
