Absolutely fabulous!

We absolutely loved the Old Town part of Luoyang. We spent a good 2-3 hours there just walking, shopping, eating and seeing the locals. We had read about there being a fee to enter, but there was not. We might have missed a part of the gate that is more of an attraction than the entrance on the south side, but we are not sure. There was something for everyone in this area as far as knick-knacks, sweets, noodles, calligraphy, and other shopping. Something to note that should not be missed is the Tri-Color Glazed Pottery that is found here and somewhat in Xi'an. We traveled to Xi'an after being in Luoyang, and the pottery was MUCH easier to find in Old Town and at Longmen Grottoes. So, if you find yourself fancying some of the horses, camels, or porcelain ladies, get them in Luoyang! The prices are amazingly low. Great to take home as gifts, as nobody will already have something like it, most likely. I've scoured Beijing and Shanghai both and cannot find the pieces that I did in Luoyang.

    The real oriental marketplace
The marketplace is behind the Drum tower - beautiful masterpiece of ancient chineese architecture. Full of foodstuff, consumer goods, chineese handicrafts and other attractions, the market looks as a tourist object. But oh! we saw only a few western tourists, mostly chineese people were there. They tried foods, argued about the prices or just talked with vendors. So this market appeared to be the real city market. Some cooks baked roasted and boiled their foodstuff just in the street, their aroma was spicy and yummy but we did not dare to try it being warned by our guide of it's probable danger for our stomachs. Some of cooking processes were amasing. Two men beated a pellet of honey mixed with nuts with huge wooden hammers. They cooked oriental sweets. We bought some cookies with black sesame and almond, they were tasteful. The other man prepared dough by pulling it and then hanging over the hook. Meat pieces for roasting were strung on the the twigs of the red willow. Plenty of chicken legs, pork hoofs, other chineese specialities, seafood, fruits fresh dried or caramelised, nuts and other food were there. The market is an interesting place to visit, very exotic and really oriental.
