Kaifeng Iron Tower Park, Henan, China

The only remnant of ancient Kaifeng

Kaifeng, located south of the Yellow River was totally flooded several time in history and most of its history is buried under layers of mud. The Iron Pagoda was constructed on a hill (great foresight) so after the many flooding through the centuries, it is now at ground level. So it is about the only authentic historical structure left in Kaifeng. We climbed to the top, thankfully we were the only ones in our group to do so as the space inside is extremely tight and it is very hard to pass another person. It reminded me of the Cu Chi tunnels of the Viet Cong. Relics of the Buddha have been found here under the Pagoda.

    Beautiful Old Tower
A very scenic place/ You can walk around the park grounds and climb the pagoda itself. There are a couple of souvenir shops in the grounds, less overpriced than in some parts of the city.

Perhaps the oldest structure in Kaifeng City
We reached the entrance of Kaibao Shi Pagoda (开宝寺塔), or commonly known as Iron Pagoda, or Tie Ta of Kaifeng (开封铁塔) around 4:30 pm. The pagoda was built using glazed bricks (琉璃砖) which the colour of the bricks resembles rusty iron. That's how the Iron Pagoda got its name. Built in 1049 in Song Dynasty, the octagonal pagoda is 55.88 meters in height. The pagoda was built to replace its predecessor, which was destroyed by fire sparked by lightning. To avoid the lightning struck twice on the same place, engineers at that time decided to built the tower with glazed brick, which was non-flammable material with zero conductivity. Brilliant engineers! The entrance fee of the pagoda garden is CNY30. Another CNY30 is required to enter the pagoda. The garden opens 8:00 am - 5:30 pm. The pagoda garden is beautiful, but the pagoda is really far far away from the entrance, thus taking the electric car (referred as battery car in China) to get to the compound the pagoda with CNY10 for a return trip is recommended. We should save energy to climb the pagoda. Worth a visit? Definitely yes!!
